If you ever want to dig in deeper, we provide you with all of the resources and links in the footer of each post like this, so that you can do that if you so choose.

First, let’s talk about COVID-19 Case Counts in Hawaii:

  • 4 new cases reported on Oahu in the last 24 hours
  • Statewide total since day one is 685 cases, with 91% of people having been released from isolation. More than 64,000 people in Hawaii have been TESTED for COVID19.
  • Fortunately, Hawaii is one of the safest places to be and has some of the lowest case counts in the entire country!

Next, Visitor Travel Restrictions:

  • BREAKING NEWS! Trans-Pacific visitor 14-day quarantine extended through July 31, 2020! As we have predicted for weeks now, Governor Ige in true fashion extended the Trans-Pacific traveler quarantine through July 31, 2020 and did so, once again, without providing any other concrete plans or strategies for reopening travel to visitors from outside of the Hawaiian Islands!

When will quarantine be lifted?:

  • Good question! At this point our best guess is that only Gov. Ige’s fortune teller would be able to know such things!

What is it like currently on Oahu?

  • More and more stores and businesses are opening, as allowed.
  • Some in restaurant dining has been opened up.
  • City and County (C&C) public access areas adjacent restaurants are being made available for now to allow for more safely distanced outside dining options.
  • The majority of people wear masks when going to stores, as it is required to do so, when picking up food or any other place where they are having close contact in a transactional way.
  • When at the beach or park or just walking around, many people are not wearing masks due to the ease of keeping a good social distancing. Locals are not wearing masks when exercising.

What is the Status of legal Vacation Rentals:

  • Legal vacation rentals are still Deemed as non-essential, as least for Honolulu County on Oahu.
  • The Mayor of Kauai was able to obtain Governor approval to allow Kauai vacation rentals to open up again on June 16, coinciding with the lifting of the 14-day quarantine on inter-island travel.

Other Recent News Updates and Headlines from Hawaii:

  • Legal Actions? Yes, we are learning more about this…
    • Not surprisingly, we are starting to learn of legal actions being taken and threats of legal action, if government officials do not allow for fair and equal treatment of businesses, including vacation rentals.
    • Things are getting more heated, and rightfully so! There are hundreds of thousands of people out of work in Hawaii right now and thousands of Hawaii’s small businesses are at risk of closing their doors for good. Hawaii’s economic future is in dire straights and in jeopardy of being impacted on an even deeper level by the lack of a viable plan and strategy for reopening Hawaii to outside visitor travel.
    • See the links below for more details.
  • As air travel slowly returns, thermal screening at HNL to begin.
  • National: ‘People are getting in planes’: The travel business is picking up…but not to Hawaii…unless you like the idea of a 14-day in-home quarantine experience.
  • Quarantine violators are often arrested, when found to be in violation.
  • Iolani Palace to reopen with new precautions in place.
  • Film and TV crews get go-ahead to resume productions on Oahu.
  • Las Vegas and Orlando are welcoming back tourists. Some ask: Why not Hawaii?
  • An airline merger will result in a new direct inter-island flight.
  • With tourism still shut down, head of Hawaii Tourism Authority announces retirement. One of many indicators of a breakdown in Hawaii’s leadership structure in recent months amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

LOVE HAWAII VILLAS IN THE NEWS

Broker/Owner of Love Hawaii Villas, Munro Murdock, was interviewed for the following recent news coverage. To be clear, Love Hawaii Villas is in favor of ALL legal Hawaii accommodations options, including hotels, to be able to be open and operate on an equal basis. The discrimination against legal short-term rentals during and following the COVID-19 travel shutdowns is not acceptable and it violates property Owner’s constitutional rights of use for their properties. Much of the media involvement has been in an effort to help dispel misconceptions and to represent the rights of legal short-term vacation rental owners throughout Hawaii, not just for the property Owners we have as clients. Industry leaders, even competitors, have come together to unite in this cause off ensuring equality in the accommodations sector of the Hawaii visitor travel industry!
